Design/Layout
Using the right software program isn’t always enough. Going ‘outside’
the standards of what
many popular software packages offer takes your advertisement to a
higher plane!
Creativity, the proper
use of colors, photographs, fonts and graphics will make or break
your next project. Whether
is a Business Card or Full Color Catalog, here are some basics
to remember:
• Color - grab your client’s attention but don’t over do it!
Just because you can use more than
one color, don’t complete with the content of your copy by it’s over
use.
• Simple is better - the old KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method
works best when creating
layouts. Make sure your message is clear and obvious.
• Copy - keep text to a minimum unless you’re designing a
technical journal.
| •
Font usage - definitely an area that needs attention. |

Choose
fonts that are unique to you and use them for highlights while
keeping the
font used for copy easy to read. Also, stay consistent in your
font use. |
|
#2
- |
You
should limit the use of different type styles to three. That
doesn’t mean Times
Roman, Times Bold, Times Italic and Times Italic Bold make four.
That’s still
considered one. |

#3
- |
Don’t
use the italic icon to turn a font into a leaning tower, use the
actual italic font
– it will always be the same from one printer to the next. Not
all software packages
‘lean’ the same way. |
• Graphics/Photographs - don’t use the low resolution styles that
are included with many
software packages. Either create professional graphics or purchase image
CD’s.
Remember, the quality of
your layout conveys to your client the quality of your services. Let’s
make sure that message you send is a professional one.
